Anchor was founded in Mumbai by Mr. D.L. Shah and Mr. J.L. Shah, from humble beginnings, marking its start with a moulding unit dedicated to manufacturing high-quality electrical accessories. The brand went on to revolutionize the Indian electrical industry with the invention of the iconic Piano switch design, setting new benchmarks in safety, aesthetics, and reliability.

Anchor emerged as India’s top electrical accessories brand, setting industry benchmarks and surpassing multinational competitors through its unwavering commitment to quality and innovation.

Supporting individuals with disabilities
Anchor began its heartfelt association with Navchetana Andhjan Mandal, Kutch, an initiative inspired by Late Shri Damjibhai Anchorwala’s compassion and vision for inclusion. The collaboration supports education, vocational training, healthcare, and empowerment of the visually impaired and differently-abled, fostering dignity, independence, and equal opportunity for all.

Empowering Education and Community Development
Guided by Late Shri Damjibhai Anchorwala’s vision, Anchor has championed education since 1985 through institutions like Shah & Anchor Engineering College, now NAAC ‘A’ Grade and UGC autonomous (2024–2034) — a lasting legacy of learning and leadership.

Humanity in Action
During the severe drought that struck Kutch from 1986 to 1988, Anchor played a pivotal role in relief and rehabilitation efforts. The company’s unwavering service and commitment to its community earned high appreciation from the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi.

The Water Man of Kutch
Under the visionary leadership of Late Shri Damjibhai Anchorwala, Kutch witnessed a powerful movement to secure its rightful share of Narmada waters. Spearheading the ‘Narmada Samarthan Abhiyan,’ he mobilized a rally of more than 150000 people in Mumbai, advocating for water access and irrigation rights. His relentless efforts led to a significant increase in irrigation coverage — from 37,000 to 1,12,000 hectares — ensuring a lifeline for the region’s future.

Championing Animal Welfare
Founded Anchorwala Ahinsadham is a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital and shelter, providing care for over 6,000 animals and 3,700 birds each year. Recognized among India’s leading animal welfare organizations, it reflects Anchor’s deep commitment to compassion and sustainability.

FMCG Foray
Launch of Anchor White Toothpaste, Anchor became the first to introduce a 100% vegetarian toothpaste in India, blending innovation with conscience.
1999
Aid in Adversity
When Kutch was struck by a devastating cyclone, Anchor led extensive relief efforts by providing tents, food supplies, life-saving medicines, and housing to affected communities.

Global Recognition
Anchor became the World’s Largest Switch Manufacturer, achieving over 60% market share in India — a landmark that reinforced its leadership in electrical solutions.
2001
Restoring Lives Together
When a massive earthquake struck Kutch, leaving over 40,000 people homeless, Anchor, under the aegis of Sarva Seva Sangh, established relief camps providing daily meals to thousands and sponsored the rehabilitation of three villages.

Elegance Redefined
Introduced Dyna Premium Beauty Soap featuring Katrina Kaif, which quickly emerged among the fastest-growing beauty soap brands in India.
2011
Mega Deal of the Decade
Leveraging its strong market leadership and deep-rooted consumer trust in India, Anchor Electricals was acquired by the Panasonic Group for USD 650 million, marking the largest acquisition in India by a Japanese company at its time and setting a new benchmark in the electrical industry.
2016
Innovation in Oral Care
Launched Anchor Whitening with HAP Toothpaste, a breakthrough innovation powered by Hydroxyapatite (HAP) — a natural mineral identical to the substance teeth are made of. With every brush, HAP helps fill and repair micro-cracks, strengthening enamel and preventing cavity formation for healthier, whiter teeth.
